Barcode Labels: Fact VS Fiction
Where barcode labels are concerned there is quite a few misconceptions that have evolved over many years. We hope to remove and address these in this article.
GSM Online Label Sales have manufactured plastic and metal barcode labels for over 45 years and are a leading expert on their uses and application.
Let us explore the most common misconceptions so we may reveal if they are fact or fiction;
“Barcode Labels can be read only using a special scanner”
In previous years but not that long ago special barcode scanners were required by users to read the encoded information within the barcode. However, because of the digital revolution and how fast technology is evolving it is possible to download software so the barcode labels may be scanned using any tablet or android devices.
“Barcode labels replace Datamatrix and QR Codes”
The difference between QR codes and barcodes is that a QR code may only hold static information in the form of a url for a website. These are useful (especially at the moment) because it means a user or prospect of your product may scan the QR code to visit your website without touching the product.
A barcode and datamatrix code are a fairer comparison as both may hold variable information. Although a datamatrix code can be much smaller than a barcode, a barcode may hold much more information than a datamatrix code. Therefore, neither can be replaced as they both serve a very important role in coding and it will generally be determined by specification as to which will be used.
“Barcode labels are only used in supermarkets”
To a consumer (who has no use within their business for barcode labels) this may be how they think but barcode labels are used EVERYWHERE. They can include as much or as little information as necessary for your individual requirement.
Once we have the information required, we generate the barcode using our specialised state of the art software before we begin to print. Because barcodes can be used in various applications it is important to use a material that is robust enough to withstand the elements that it is subjected to. Therefore, GSM Online Label Sales offer barcode labels printed on either metal or plastic to ensure maximum durability.
